OF BEARS, BIKES & MAPLE

A Canadian Tour Diary

Part 3. Dinosaurs & 'Frame'-ups

The journey from Winnipeg to Regina, Saskatchewan was easy cycling, but hot; temperatures regularly reaching 38°C. this run of scorching weather was dramatically shattered. I arrived in Regina in a rage of black thunderclouds, torrential rain and howling wind. Barns and roofs torn-up and my nerves severely damaged (though for the first time I reaped the benefit on wearing a bicycle helmet; protection from hailstones the size of grapes). The worst storm Saskatchewan had seen in decades, I found out later.
Regina's main claim to fame, other than being the provincial capital, is the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Academy. I guess it was appropriate that I was almost arrested (the glove didn't fit, I was framed), in a case of 'fitting the description' of some wrong-doer. When I wasn't being repressed by elements of the police force, I was trying, unsuccessfully, to find spare brake pads for my Magura hydraulics, before I hit The Rockies. Oh yeah and I had an international 25th birthday celebration (2 Aussies and a Norwegian).
"I was framed"

Canada Day weekend. I stopped in Youngstown, Alberta; a small cow-town. I had only meant to stop for one night, but the whole town was buying me beer and they, and my subsequent hang-over just wouldn't let me go. It was here that I experienced 'cow-bingo'. If the cow dumps in your square, you win!
Once I'd dragged myself away from Youngstown, I headed to Drumheller in the Canadian badlands. An area of the most amazing rock formations; the lines of sediment are so clearly defined, it's like one of those stripy ice-lollies, honest! The major attraction in Drumheller is the Royal Tyrell Museum of Palaeontology. It's a working museum and study base for palaeontologists (experts on extinct things). They have stunning dinosaur exhibits; they're the folk that everywhere else gets their exhibits from. Also while in Drumheller, I visited a reptile house; where I actually managed to hold a snake (there's an old story of childhood and snakes, too long to tell)!
